One of the earliest peoples to reside in\u00a0Southeast Asia, the Mon were responsible for the spread of\u00a0Theravada\u00a0Buddhism\u00a0in Burma and Thailand. The\u00a0Mon culture\u00a0is credited as a major source of influence on the dominant\u00a0Burmese culture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #888888;\">As the eastern Mon were absorbed into the\u00a0Thai society\u00a0long ago, the western Mon of Burma have largely assimilated into Burmese society. In Burma, the Mon are fighting to preserve the\u00a0Mon language\u00a0and culture, and regain a greater degree of political autonomy. The Mon of Burma are divided into three sub-groups based on their ancestral region in Lower Burma: the\u00a0Man Nya\u00a0from\u00a0Pathein\u00a0(the\u00a0Irrawaddy delta) in the west, the\u00a0Man<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #888888;\">Bago\u00a0in the central region, and the\u00a0Man:\u00a0Mottama\u00a0in the southeast. Once the predominant ethno-linguistic group inLower Burma, speakers of the Mon language number fewer than one million today,and those of Mon descent number anywhere between two million and eight million. \u00a0The majority of Mon are monolingual in the\u00a0Burmese language, and are counted as members of the majority\u00a0Bamar\u00a0(Burmans). Recent studies have suggested evidence indicating that the Mon and Bamar share a common genetic ancestry.
