9th New-Territories (flash-back 1993-2050) 

s/he would rather do FICTION MAKer

In 2016, nearly twenty years after its first exhibition at the Frac
Centre-Val de Loire, New-Territories has been invited again for a
“1993-2050 flashback”.


This event retraces and traces more than 50 years of work, scenarios, projects, controversies and foresights. It presents the prolific production of the Avatar, a hybrid figure digitally generated in 1993 to stand in for the jackboot or masterfull figure of the “architect/author” and to synthesize his multiple collaborations– BoyeRoche (1989); Roche (1990); Roche & François (1991); R-F-L-H-R-P (1992); Roche, DSV & Sie (1993-97); R, DSV & Sie. P (1998); R & Sie. D/B: L(1999-2001); R&Sie(n) (2001 to 2011), and [elf/b_t/c] (2011-2016)…
  All of these partnership, labels, and systems constitute the fragments of the New-Territories matrix, which has alternately generated, activated, and put them on standby since 1993. “s/he would rather do FICTION MAKER” (“eILe Pr_FAIRE la FICTION”), the title of the exhibition, immediately points to the two premises that underpin the proposition: on the one hand, the figure of the androgyne, of Aphrodite; a being who refuses gender and therefore refuses to dominate territories or to dominate both through form and matter. On the other hand, “Faire la Fiction” [Making Fiction / FICTION MAKER] functions as a mode of operation to model the world, to script it. By refusing any form of imprisonment, New-Territories lives in a state of permanent migration; always elsewhere – elsewhere geographically, but also (and always) at the very centre of architecture as a collaborative magnetic zone that combines architecture with cinema, writing, and sharing with artists, philosophers, biologists, mathematicians, and sometimes other architects… It is a porous structure opened to the world.

.....  ..... Although it already understood the full potential of digital  technologies as early as 1990, New-Territories never stopped  revealing their disorders and limitations. In its own words:  “Architecture is not a matter of projection, but a matter of  ‘distortion of reality’.” In “s/he would rather do FICTION MAKER”, the public is invited on a “paranoiac odyssey” through a series of historic projects (most of which are part of the Frac Centre-Val de Loire collection) and “anthropotechnic” scenarios, (including New-Territories’ latest venture : M4 -mindmachinemakingmyths). New-Territories is a polymorphous architecture organization. Founded in 1993, it has embraced different labels, names, strategies and purposes. New-Territories is fronted by the androgynous avatar, trans- gender avatar, _S/he_, who authorized Francois Roche to write, talk and teach on his/her behalf, as a PS / personal secretary, an Ariadne’s wire of this ectoplasmic system and paranoiac mind.

A new piece, designed specifically for one of the Turbulences spaces, uses robotic and computational processes to once more question the idea of losing control of or emancipating from the preliminary design. This involves an uncertain system in the
“Making”, which reacts in real time and substitutes contingencies
and artefacts for 3D modelling.

The exhibition will scramble chronology in favour of a nonlinear, both geographic and psychoanalytic approach of the projects. It will track the permanence of certain architectural and technological strategies, the architect’s obsessions, the attitudes and systems inherent to a renewed relationship to the world in its biological, political, and technical dimensions.

Voice-overs, convergence lines, modes of operation, and mechanic devices within critical strategies guide and abandon us through a fiction/reality refrain.

A book of interviews serves as an opening and closing of the event. The publication includes interviews with Sylvia Lavin (historian and architecture critic), Jeffrey Kipnis (historian and architecture critic), Cynthia Davidson (architecture critic and publisher), Greg Lynn (architect), Bart Lootsma (historian and architecture critic), Hans Ulrich Obrist (curator), Bruce Sterling (writer), Stéphanie Lavaux (Associate and Artist), and many others. It directly and literally poses the question of the \ man who presents himself as the private secretary of “New-Territories”: “_Who are you, François Roche?” by Marie Vic.

“Experimental architecture has shifted toward a new corpus of instrumentations, made out of tools, computation, mechanisation, but also and simultaneously of fictions and lines of subjectivity, synchronous with our symptoms; of fears and great escapes in the “here and now”. The purpose of this 1993-2050 flashback is to explore attitudes that show a correlation, a co-dependency with the forms they underpin, through their conflicts and reciprocities. It is to discover a post-digital, post-human, post-activist, post-democratic, post-feminist world, … a queer, androgynous, carnal, disturbing, disenchanted, pornographic, transient, transactional world, … where scenarios, mechanisms, misunderstandings, and psychological and physiological fragments are what make up walls and ceilings, cellars and attics, … schizoid and paranoid, between the lines of operative and critical fictions… The androgynous folds and recesses behind which… he(s) / she(s) … hide(s), trigger(s) confusion and gut reactions, suspect hostilities, fantasised idealisation, and even premeditated oblivion. We must use paradoxical postures and aesthetical mechanisms to highlight biopolitical challenges, the potentials and disorders of contemporary technologies, from their early stages to their merchandising, and suspect them of not being so harmless, beyond conventional discourses and self-conscious aesthetics…”

elLe Pr_FAIRE la FICTION



En 2016, vingt ans après la première exposition au Frac Centre-Val de Loire, New-Territories1 est invité pour un « flash-back  1993-2050 ».

Cette manifestation retrace et trace 57 ans de travail, de scénarios,  de projets, de polémiques et de prospectives. Elle donne à voir  une production foisonnante, portée par l’Avatar, cette figure  hybride générée digitalement dès 1993 pour se substituer à la  figure autoritaire de « l’architecte – auteur » et synthétiser ses  multiples collaborations – BoyeRoche (1989) ; Roche (1990) ;  Roche & François (1991) ; R-F-L-H-R-P (1992) ; Roche, DSV & Sie  (1993–97) ; R, DSV & Sie. P (1998) ; R & Sie. D/B: L (1999–2001) ;  R&Sie(n) (2001 to 2011) et [eIf/bt/c] (2011-2016)...

L’ensemble de ces collaborations, de ces labels, des ces dispositifs constituent les fragments de New-Territories, une matrice qui  depuis 1993 les génère, les mets en sommeil et les active.  « eILe Pr_FAIRE la FICTION », le titre de l’exposition annonce  d’emblée deux postulats qui sous-tendent le propos : d’une part, la figure de l’androgyne, d’Aphrodite, un être qui se refuse au genre et de fait se refuse à dominer les territoires, à dominer par la forme, à dominer avec la matière. D’autre part, « Faire la Fiction » comme mode opératoire pour faire le monde, l’écrire en scénario. Refusant toute forme d’enfermement, New-Territories vit dans un état de migration permanente ; toujours ailleurs, ailleurs en géographie, mais aussi – et toujours - au centre même de l’architecture comme une zone magnétique qui collabore mêlant à l’architecture, le cinéma, l’écriture et la collaboration avec les artistes, avec les philosophes, les biologistes, les mathématiciens, parfois les architectes... C’est une structure poreuse, ouverte... au monde.

Ayant saisi, dès 1990, tout le potentiel des technologies 
numériques, New-Territories n’a cependant eu de cesse d’en 
révéler les désordres et les limites. L’architecture n’est pas affaire 
de projection, elle est une histoire de « distorsion du réel » 
affirme New-Territories. 
Dans « eILe Pr_FAIRE la FICTION », le public est invité à 
embarquer pour une « odyssée paranoïaque » au travers d’une 
série de projets historiques (pour majeure partie conservés 
en collection du Frac Centre–Val de Loire), et de scénarios 
« anthropotechniques » (le plus récent de New- Territories, sous 
le label M4 - mindmachinemakingmyths).

New-Territories, agence d’architecture - laboratoire protéiforme 
 New-Territories est une agence d’architecture polymorphe. Fondée en 1993, elle a adopté différentes étiquettes, appelations, stratégies et missions. New-Territories est dirigée par l’avatar androgyne et transgenre, _eILe_, qui autorise François Roche à écrire, parler et enseigner en son nom, comme un secrétaire personnel, « un fil d’Ariane de ce système ectoplasmique et esprit paranoïaque. »

Une pièce inédite, produite spécifiquement pour un des espaces des Turbulences, questionne à nouveau, via des procédures robotiques et computationnelles, la perte de contrôle, l’affranchissement du design préalable. Il est question d’un dispositif incertain en train de se « Faire », réactif et en temps réel substituant contingences et artefacts aux modélisations 3D.

L’exposition brouillera la chronologie au profit d’une lecture 
non linéaire, à la fois géographique et psychanalytique des 
projets. Elle traquera la permanence de certaines stratégies 
architecturales et technologiques, les obsessions de l’architecte, 
les attitudes et les dispositifs sous-tendant à chaque fois un 
rapport renouvelé au monde, dans ses dimensions biologiques, 
politiques et techniques.

Des voix off, des lignes de fuite, des modes opératoires, des dispositifs machinistes aux creux de stratégies critiques nous guident et nous abandonnent dans une ritournelle fiction / réel.

Pour clore et ouvrir, un livre d’entretien avec Sylvia Lavin (historienne et critique d’architecture), Jeffrey Kipnis (historien et critique de l’architecture), Cynthia Davidson (critique d’architecture et éditrice), Greg Lynn (architecte), Bart Lootsma (historien et critique d’architecture), Hans Ulrich Obrist (commissaire d’exposition), Bruce Sterling (écrivain), Stephanie Lavaux (Associée et Artiste) et d’autres encore… est édité à l’occasion. Il pose directement et littéralement la question de celui qui s’énonce comme le secrétaire particulier de « New-
Territories » : ‘’_Qui êtes vous François Roche ?’’, par Marie Vic .

Commissariat : Abdelkader Damani (directeur du Frac Centre-Val de Loire) et New-Territories « …L’architecture expérimentale s’est déplacée sur un nouveau corpus  d’instrumentations, fait d’outillage, de computation, de machinisme mais aussi et simultanément de fictions et lignes de subjectivité, en synchronicité avec nos symptômes ; de peurs et d’échappées belles ‘’ici et maintenant’’. L’occasion de ce flash back 1993-2050, c’est de parcourir des attitudes en corrélation, en co-dépendances des formes qu’elles sous-tendent, au travers de leurs conflits et réciprocités. C’est découvrir un monde post digital, post humain, post activiste, post démocratique, post féministe, …un monde queer…androgyne, charnel, inquiétant, désenchanté, pornographique, transitoire, transactionnel, …ou les scénarios, dispositifs, malentendus, fragments psychiques et physiologiques sont les matériaux mêmes des murs et des plafonds, des caves et des greniers, …schizoïdes et paranoïaques, au creux de fictions opératoires  et critiques… Les plis et replis androgynes derrière lesquels… ils/elles... se dissimulent déclenchent confusions et réactions épidermiques, hostilités suspectes, idéalisation fantasmée, voir oubli prémédité. Mettre en lumière via des postures paradoxales, via des dispositifs esthétiques, les enjeux bio-politiques, les potentiels et les désordres des technologies contemporaines, de leur balbutiement à leur marchandisation, les suspecter de ne pas être si inoffensives, ni innocentes, hors du conformisme des discours et des esthétiques empruntées...»
